Educator's Wish List

Education Hack Day
On Nov 12 + 13, 2011, over 100 software developers and designers will be getting together to build apps to help teachers and schools.

To help us figure out what to build, we’d like to have teachers and school officials submit some of their problems (we know this list could be quite long so think of ways technology might help).

For example, you might say, “I wish it was easier for us to schedule parent / teacher conferences.” Or, “I wish it was easier to get permission slips signed for field trips and waivers.

We also invite you to check out ideas that have already been submitted and “vote them up” or comment on them so we can get a broader view of what you teachers really want.

  1. Get permission slips filled out and signed by parents

Right now our parents have to fill out the same information ten or more times per year. If there were a way to get their information and a "fresh" signature somehow then that would save an enormous amount of time and energy for parents and teachers.

  2. Narrating a prezi to embed for students on our class webpage of most salient points of a topic or skill would be helpful.

An easy way to narrate a prezi within prezi would be terrific. It is doable now but is clumsy. Great for students who are away or need to hear the most salient points of a discussion or skill at their convenience.

  3. Online rubric generator that could be corrected online (html or iOS?)

A rubric generator that we could make and then correct online by clicking radio buttons of each box and then placing comments where appropriate. Then having the capability to email a URL or embed it into a website would be great. We can type much more quickly than handwriting comments and it would speed things up, quickly shareable with parents, etc.

  5. return digital assignments. I want to click a button and automatically return all papers to my students.

I want to be able to digitally return graded assignments in one click instead of posting each paper to moodle or emailing to each student.

  6. Enter study information into an exciting game format, that students would be keen to play.

Game designers would create generic game formats that could be continually updated (for a fee, of course). Teachers could load study data into a study bank and this would interface with the game so that students would need to get the answer right to go to another level or gain 'weapons' or cheats.

  7. Track student work or comments submitted to blogs or wikis: a clickable interface with a class list that would go to the comment or post.

You would be able to connect a class list with a new assignment that was on a blog or wiki. You should be able to see at a glance who had submitted work and who had not and be able to click on the student name to see the work.

  8. give attribution for images (especially in iOS)

Right now it takes way too many steps to search for creative commons images and give attribution in a document.
    1. Search for image, making sure it's free for use
    2. Save image to hard drive/photo roll or copy it or copy the URL
    3. Put image into document
    4. Go back to page, copy the URL it came from
    5. Paste URL into document
    6. Find owner of image, give credit

Ideally, an HTML5 app could take care of a lot of those issues for all devices. It could search for the image, and then if a good one…

  10. Take anecdotal records on students.

I'd like a smartphone / web app which would let me keep track, by date & class, anecdotal records on students. I'd then like to be able to sort through these anecdotal records and search through them for keywords. It would also be nice to tie these anecdotal records to standards.

  12. Create Whiteboard Videos

I wish I had a virtual whiteboard in my computer or on a tablet that would allow me to play (and maybe even narrate) my whiteboard lectures for students that missed a day of school or instead of writing the same set of notes up on the board period after period. Then I could archive the videos so kids could look back at them if they need clarification

  13. Band room volume meter

My band teacher wants a large size volume meter so band members can see how softly/loudly they are playing at a glance. A visual for "pianissimo" and "fortissimo" and all the others would be helpful. I visualize a 10-20 scale set of large (or clustered) LED's in multiple colors. Maybe 3 feet tall (like a tower speaker) with a built in microphone/sensor at the top with adjustable sensitivity. Think drag race christmas tree meets audio peak meters.

  14. Hey Teacher

I wish there was a way for a student to "raise" their hand with a web tool or iOS app that would send a push notification over wifi to the teacher. The teacher then could have a que of students instead of having students call out or raise hands.

  15. Teacher Guided Web browsing

I wish it was easier for a teacher to be able to direct the websites viewable on an iPad to either co-browse or dictate specific web address to automatically populate on the student's iPad. I have actually already started working on this and have a lot of thoughts about the process, management, and settings that would be very powerful in combination. If someone at the Ed Hack Day wants to work with me on this, please let me know -- andrewcoy@gmail.com

  16. School iOS App creation

I wish there was a company that made it easy for schools to create an App for all the iPads they have recently purchased. A company that had a series of "modules" or options that a school could choose to put together to create a simple yet very useful app for in-class and at-home use.

  17. Student Behavior Tracker App

I would love to be able keep track of student behavior along a timeline. if i could just tap either a "+" or "-" state for students throughout class and it would submit the data, reseting the view every minute or more with a nuetral state if nothing was selected.

  18. Bring native foreign language speakers into my classroom via Skype

What if there was a resource where I could match my high school Spanish class with a classroom in Ecuador to practice Spanish and English with foreign language peers?

What if there was a service where my school could hire native Spanish tutors to Skype with my students once per week?

What if there was a fun "language learning" video chat roulette where my students could pick the language they want to learn, and a foreign student from that country popped up to chat live in that language?

  19. Create graphic organizers

I would love to have an app that gave me options to customize my own graphic organizer. Essentially, the app would be a blank sheet of paper. On the right would be the shapes that I could drag over to the blank sheet of paper. Then, I could easily input any text into the shapes I want. The problem with Microsoft Word is that the formatting gets all wonky and it takes a long time to get the graphic organizers just the way you want them.

  20. Play dialogues for my Spanish class

It's hard for one person to have a dialogue by herself. When I want to test aural comprehension or introduce conversational vocab in my 8th grade Spanish I class it would be great to have a second person there to talk to. There are plenty of dialogues available online, but they are not exactly aligned to what I am teaching or testing. It would be great if there were an ipad/iphone app that would let me write a dialogue in Spanish (or english or any other language that other teachers might need) beforehand and then speak with the app in…
