Educator's Wish List

Education Hack Day
On Nov 12 + 13, 2011, over 100 software developers and designers will be getting together to build apps to help teachers and schools.

To help us figure out what to build, we’d like to have teachers and school officials submit some of their problems (we know this list could be quite long so think of ways technology might help).

For example, you might say, “I wish it was easier for us to schedule parent / teacher conferences.” Or, “I wish it was easier to get permission slips signed for field trips and waivers.

We also invite you to check out ideas that have already been submitted and “vote them up” or comment on them so we can get a broader view of what you teachers really want.

  2. cite the source of a website.

Build me a widget that generates a citation (in the format of my choice) for any given website. All I do is click on it and then cut and paste into my bibliography. Why the extra step of an online generator like easy-bib?

  3. Put stock comments into a Google Docs Doc. I have macros for it in Word, but I don't want to have 10 tabs open to access comments.

I wish there were some kind of gadget that I could put in oft-repeated comments to make feedback on student writing more efficient.

I wish there was a way to use a tablet (droid or iPad) as an interwrite tablet. Currently the Interwrite tablet does not show what is being projected on the screen. It is simlply a blank tablet to use to mark/write on PowerPoint slides during a presentation. I like to move around the class when I teach and trying to remember where the mouse is on a interwrite tablet is annoying. I would love to be able to carry a tablet around and see the slides I am presenting and be able to write on them so I am not…

  5. run historical simulations online rather than having to set them up with paper/pencil

I have a number of historical simulations for my middle school US History class. Some of my favorites involve trying to prevent WWI through diplomacy, trading stocks before, during, and after the crash of 1929, and living on a fixed income during the Great Depression. I would love to see these turned into online games so that they could be used more efficiently and could be repeated to help students learn more.

  6. create a picture seating chart that takes roll via face recognition

I wish we could also idiotproof and quich and easy way to upload a class list of names and student pictures into another software so that we can print out picture id's for substitutes now we have to pic each picture individually and paste them into our pic folder and then paste them into another document like in Word and then have a pic id list

  8. have some sort of grammar manipulative

Students should be able to move words/phrases/clauses around by dragging and dropping. Ideally, the teacher can plug in the sample sentences or use some sort of item bank. A drag & drop diagramming component would be great too.

  9. (and free) to send information via text to parents and students.

I wish there was a site that could manage parent/student cell numbers and allow me to send free group texts to organized groups. Example: "Hey, this is a reminder that homework is due tomorrow for Algebra class!"

  11. Stay organized!

Teachers are running around busy all day and things tend to pile up for later. Before you know it, the pile has grown. Between books, guides, loose papers, and computer files there is a lot to manage when planning a lesson. Wish I had it all in one place!

  14. administer, score, and review the DIBELS assessment that we use for every child.

The DIBLES assessment is a wonderful tool to track growth and check learning, but it is time consuming and requires endless copies and calculations. It would be great to have this tool or other similar assessments available as an app to administer it on (rather than paper) and do the calculations automatically.

  16. integrate different attendance/grading/behavior tracking software into a single, easy-to-use program.

There are dozens of applications that teachers and school districts use that offer the ability to track attendance issues, grades, and other clerical duties required by every teacher. Often, teachers are asked to use multiple programs to do similar things. A single program that can be used nation-wide would be fantastic for teachers. Every district has different policies, but if these policies/rules are automatically streamlined into the program, it would be very simple to create an online database that holds information for each child. If this single program is used throughout the country, then it would make for an easier…

  20. Get permission slips signed and returned

When you have a field trip or you need something signed by parent like a photo release, it is very difficult to get secondary students to get it to their parents and returned. Build an app to create the Field trip etc. document and some way for the parent to send it back quickly from their smart phone, text, computer to the teacher directly.
