Developer Discussion
Education Hack Day
On Nov 12 + 13, 2011, over 100 software developers and designers will be getting together to build apps to help teachers and schools.
Over in the Educator’s Wish List, we’re asking teachers to submit ideas or “wishes” that will hopefully inspire you to build a solution.
Feel free to use this space to submit your own ideas, API requests, questions, and other brainstorming.

Student To-Do List Populated by Teachers
We would like to build a simple, straightforward to do list (ala teuxdeux.com) directed at students that can be populated by teachers, and perhaps parents. This would make it easy for teachers, parents, and students to communicate assignments and expectations with each other with very minimal effort. It would also promote good organizational skills for students from a young age.

Homework Notifier
Might be nice if parents could get a notification (phone, SMS, e-mail, etc.) if a teacher assigns homework. Always easier to tell the kids to do their homework if parents know what was assigned, when it is due, etc.

Parent / Teacher Conferences Scheduled via Phone / Email
Right now the current way of scheduling these conferences is for a teacher to create a calendar and write down their available time slots. They then send this calendar home with the students and wait for parents to pick 2 or 3 dates that suit them. The teacher then painstakingly tries to coordinate that schedule to satisfy all the parents.
What if this was handled via a web and phone service? Similar to Tungle.me. Teach creates a calendar and sends home a "parent pin" to each parent. Parent calls in and puts in their pin. They then use dialpad to…

Open source "Boardmaker" for speech rehabilitation
Companies make a killing off of this software. We could make something for free, and in one weekend. Just need to have the ability to for therapists to add images and possibly use a text-to-speech library, so that when pressed the image title is audible.

Permission Slips & Waivers Handled via Phone / Email
Last week I was talking to Scott Messenger, a Baltimore city teacher and developer, and he told me that he has a huge batch of student photos that he can't release because he doesn't have each student's waiver signed.
What if this was handled over the phone? Parent dial's a toll-free number, types in their "parent pin", and verbally authorizes their child for photo waivers, field trips, and other requirable waivers. This idea of a "parent pin" is used on another one of my ideas.
Heck, we could even use the Face.com free API for facial recognition and upload a…

Student Management
I am creating a large scale student management package for teachers which at its most basic keeps track of your class list as well as any student IDs (for calculators, clickers, etc) that you have assigned. The program then has the capability to create seating charts, group students randomly, by drag and drop, or by test scores (hetero/homogenous), as well as a place to report/keep track of attendance and discipline issues. It may also be extended to import student contact information. The program is designed to have all of this functionality in one place.

Note taking web app design specifically for students
There are many existing web apps designed for taking notes and saving things but few designed specifically for students and fewer done well. An app specifically for students could help them store notes for different classes as well as help organize how the notes are taken on the page (simple hierarchy, collapsable sections fast formatting). It could also take full advantage of being a web app by linking between note entries, collecting highlighted sections and linking out to further sources. Other possible features include using the student's own notes to help them study or allowing teacher access to provide note-taking…

princiPal
princiPal would be a dashboard app which would allow principals and other key administrators to visualize real-time data about their school. The app could integrate everything from basic demographic information about their school's neighborhood to local news articles about their school, crime data about their immediate surroundings, data on other schools in the area (both public and private), social media chatter (students and staff tweeting about the school, Facebook comments), and crowd-sourced staff performance data from websites like RateMyTeachers.com
An app like this would help to keep a principal informed about the general health and activity of their surrounding community,…

Q&A database to help people compile tests, trivia games, etc.
A clearing house for questions and their answers that can be searched and filtered by level of difficulty, format (multiple choice, single answer, etc.), category (math, geography, 80's music, etc.). Embedable interactive whiteboard.
An interactive whiteboard that comes equipped with math and drawing tools. This app should be able to be embedded into posts on sites like Edmodo and function like a live chat. Instead of only typing a response you can draw one. I've used Coveritlive, but it's text oriented. I liked that i could embed a coveritlive session into a post on Edmodo.

Live virtual class trips
You can take a day trip to a museum or science center, but what if that location is too far away or your school doesn't have the budget? What if you could take your entire class on a live virtual trip to a museum straight from the classroom? A live video feed where a human tour guide can walk a class through exhibits and can interact with students over live video, text-based Q&A, polling. Great for science, art history, architecture, and other subjects that are visual-based.

Student health tracker
Obesity and inactivity are affecting our youth. They don't eat well or may not know how to, and play video games instead of playing outside. This application will enable teachers and students to track their lunch choices and physical activities for the day. It can also enable students and teachers to set classroom goals to shoot for. For example, a goal for the entire class could be to eat a specific number of fruits and vegetables. This holds the entire classroom accountable for each other and students can learn responsible eating, exercising, and the positive feeling of goal achievement.

Learning Webs - tools to take education back out of schools.
http://deschoolingsociety.digress.it/learning-webs/#textblock-26
Ivan Illich wrote about this stuff 30+ years ago and people are just now getting
around to building it on the web. I'd like to pick one part, maybe more than
one, and try to figure out what the associated service will look like and how it
should work.I want to build decentralized tools for connecting people to educational resources based on Illich's "four different approaches". The link includes full descriptions.
