Educator's Wish List
Education Hack Day
On Nov 12 + 13, 2011, over 100 software developers and designers will be getting together to build apps to help teachers and schools.
To help us figure out what to build, we’d like to have teachers and school officials submit some of their problems (we know this list could be quite long so think of ways technology might help).
For example, you might say, “I wish it was easier for us to schedule parent / teacher conferences.” Or, “I wish it was easier to get permission slips signed for field trips and waivers.”
We also invite you to check out ideas that have already been submitted and “vote them up” or comment on them so we can get a broader view of what you teachers really want.

run historical simulations online rather than having to set them up with paper/pencil
I have a number of historical simulations for my middle school US History class. Some of my favorites involve trying to prevent WWI through diplomacy, trading stocks before, during, and after the crash of 1929, and living on a fixed income during the Great Depression. I would love to see these turned into online games so that they could be used more efficiently and could be repeated to help students learn more.

administer, score, and review the DIBELS assessment that we use for every child.
The DIBLES assessment is a wonderful tool to track growth and check learning, but it is time consuming and requires endless copies and calculations. It would be great to have this tool or other similar assessments available as an app to administer it on (rather than paper) and do the calculations automatically.

Get permission slips signed and returned
When you have a field trip or you need something signed by parent like a photo release, it is very difficult to get secondary students to get it to their parents and returned. Build an app to create the Field trip etc. document and some way for the parent to send it back quickly from their smart phone, text, computer to the teacher directly.

(and free) to send information via text to parents and students.
I wish there was a site that could manage parent/student cell numbers and allow me to send free group texts to organized groups. Example: "Hey, this is a reminder that homework is due tomorrow for Algebra class!"

I wish there was a way to use a tablet (droid or iPad) as an interwrite tablet. Currently the Interwrite tablet does not show what is being projected on the screen. It is simlply a blank tablet to use to mark/write on PowerPoint slides during a presentation. I like to move around the class when I teach and trying to remember where the mouse is on a interwrite tablet is annoying. I would love to be able to carry a tablet around and see the slides I am presenting and be able to write on them so I am not…

Get permission slips filled out and signed by parents
Right now our parents have to fill out the same information ten or more times per year. If there were a way to get their information and a "fresh" signature somehow then that would save an enormous amount of time and energy for parents and teachers.

Bring native foreign language speakers into my classroom via Skype
What if there was a resource where I could match my high school Spanish class with a classroom in Ecuador to practice Spanish and English with foreign language peers?
What if there was a service where my school could hire native Spanish tutors to Skype with my students once per week?
What if there was a fun "language learning" video chat roulette where my students could pick the language they want to learn, and a foreign student from that country popped up to chat live in that language?

make fill in the blank Cornell notes generator.
It would be nice to not only have a fill in the blank Cornell notes (mandated by my school) generator to make printables, but also have a digital worksheet where students could edit/manipulate the notes on their own devices.

Paperless school or less paper school. My dream is to bridge the digital divide by giving every student an electronic device that taps in the power of technology.
This device must be affordable, free is best, have WIFI, a word program and the ability to download e-books, store student work most importantly allow students to access the power of the web.2 votes -

monitor target language use in the FL classroom/ promote target language use
As a language teacher I push my students to speak in the language but they respond best to a points system. It is very difficult to monitor all student speech and continually update positive/negative effort.

highlight the words as you move along reading a book or anything else online but books primarily.
You could load any online book into the app and the reader could use the spacebar or an arrow key to move a highlight square along the words as she read at your her pace. If you could also have the option to have the highlight box move along at different cadences by itself to help lead the reader that would be a bonus.

Students described their ideal mobile learning app...
Example:
'The Real Thing' Some students have hard times with subjects, but they don't want to ask teachers. This app would let them watch videos or talk to real professionals about the subjects they're learning in school.
