Educator's Wish List

Education Hack Day
On Nov 12 + 13, 2011, over 100 software developers and designers will be getting together to build apps to help teachers and schools.

To help us figure out what to build, we’d like to have teachers and school officials submit some of their problems (we know this list could be quite long so think of ways technology might help).

For example, you might say, “I wish it was easier for us to schedule parent / teacher conferences.” Or, “I wish it was easier to get permission slips signed for field trips and waivers.

We also invite you to check out ideas that have already been submitted and “vote them up” or comment on them so we can get a broader view of what you teachers really want.

  1. schedule meetings and collect data for Student Support Team to keep track of students behavior improvements and academic progress

There is currently a struggle to get current data from teachers and to get parents to show to meetings. It would be great to have something that would track the data better and also make it easier to keep track of scheduled meetings to get parents more involved and communicate progress to parents.

  2. Help develop a program for non speaking autsim students

I would like to see a program where during lessons
and activities the students could easily communicate
and interact with other students during circle time
, lessons, etc. Many of these devises are very
expensive and not available to the schools.

  4. make fill in the blank Cornell notes generator.

It would be nice to not only have a fill in the blank Cornell notes (mandated by my school) generator to make printables, but also have a digital worksheet where students could edit/manipulate the notes on their own devices.

  5. observe student behavior using an iPod

Special ed teachers, school psychologists, and social workers would find an app that assists in observing student behavior quite valuable. We are required by IDEA to do observations focused on student behavior however there are no good apps that are customizable to do this. For example, I may want to track 3 different behaviors at customizable intervals in various ways (i.e. frequency, whole-interval, partial-interval, time sampling, duration, etc.). Although there are some apps out there, they are not customizable. Talk to any school psychologist about this idea and they would LOVE it.

  6. I wish that I could keep all my files in one place (ex. grades, attendance, permission forms)

I wish that I could keep all my files in one place (ex. grades with attendance, permission forms, lesson plan book). This would make it easier to see what students missed. It also would allow all information to be housed in one place instead of 5 different programs.

  7. Put stock comments into a Google Docs Doc. I have macros for it in Word, but I don't want to have 10 tabs open to access comments.

I wish there were some kind of gadget that I could put in oft-repeated comments to make feedback on student writing more efficient.

I wish there was a way to use a tablet (droid or iPad) as an interwrite tablet. Currently the Interwrite tablet does not show what is being projected on the screen. It is simlply a blank tablet to use to mark/write on PowerPoint slides during a presentation. I like to move around the class when I teach and trying to remember where the mouse is on a interwrite tablet is annoying. I would love to be able to carry a tablet around and see the slides I am presenting and be able to write on them so I am not…

  9. run historical simulations online rather than having to set them up with paper/pencil

I have a number of historical simulations for my middle school US History class. Some of my favorites involve trying to prevent WWI through diplomacy, trading stocks before, during, and after the crash of 1929, and living on a fixed income during the Great Depression. I would love to see these turned into online games so that they could be used more efficiently and could be repeated to help students learn more.

  12. have some sort of grammar manipulative

Students should be able to move words/phrases/clauses around by dragging and dropping. Ideally, the teacher can plug in the sample sentences or use some sort of item bank. A drag & drop diagramming component would be great too.

  13. (and free) to send information via text to parents and students.

I wish there was a site that could manage parent/student cell numbers and allow me to send free group texts to organized groups. Example: "Hey, this is a reminder that homework is due tomorrow for Algebra class!"

  16. administer, score, and review the DIBELS assessment that we use for every child.

The DIBLES assessment is a wonderful tool to track growth and check learning, but it is time consuming and requires endless copies and calculations. It would be great to have this tool or other similar assessments available as an app to administer it on (rather than paper) and do the calculations automatically.
